Waterfalls on both sides of town
Lawson sits at about 732 metres with falls country north and south. The South Lawson Waterfall Circuit links Adelina, Cataract, Federal and Junction Falls below the town; north of the highway there is Dante Glen, Fairy Falls, St Michaels Falls and the Echo Bluff lookout. Honour Avenue, which gives access to the southern walks, sits inside a heritage conservation area.
All that water is lovely and it is also the reason roofs here behave the way they do. Moisture sits in the gullies, fog forms in them, and houses on the gully edges stay damp long after the rain has stopped.

The dominant pattern: things that never dry
A roof that dries out in a day is a roof that lasts. Lawson roofs often do not get that chance, which produces a specific set of faults:
- Moss and lichen on southern pitches, established thickly, with roots working between tile courses and lifting edges
- Persistently damp bedding mortar under ridge caps, which then freezes — frost is a regular event at this altitude — and breaks apart from inside
- Valley boards rotting under litter that stays wet rather than drying between falls of rain
- Fascia timber soft behind gutters that hold wet leaf for months at a time
- Ceiling-space condensation on metal roofs without adequate ventilation
Most of those are restoration work rather than repairs: clean down, treat the growth, rebed and repoint, renew the valleys, seal and recoat.
The stock
A mix of weatherboard and fibro cottages, inter-war and post-war tile, and later brick veneer, with the 1903 Mechanics Institute building at the centre of town as a reminder of how long people have been roofing here. Original pitches are often steep, which helps shed litter but slows work down and needs real edge protection.
